Engine Care

Briggs & Stratton engine maintenance.

  1. Oil Change: Run engine briefly to warm oil. Disconnect spark plug. Tip mower (carburetor side up) to drain oil into pan from fill tube. Refill with correct amount of SAE 30 detergent oil.
  2. Air Filter: Remove cover. Clean foam pre-cleaner in soapy water, dry, and re-oil lightly. Replace paper filter if dirty.
  3. Spark Plug: Disconnect wire. Clean around plug. Remove and check gap (0.030"). Replace if electrodes are worn.
  4. Fuel System: Use fresh gasoline. At season end, either run carburetor dry or add fuel stabilizer.

WARNING! Always disconnect spark plug wire before performing any maintenance to prevent accidental starting.

Blade Care & Sharpening

A sharp, balanced blade is essential for a clean cut and engine health.

  1. Removal: Disconnect spark plug. Tip mower on its side (air filter up). Use a block of wood to prevent blade from turning. Remove center bolt and blade.
  2. Sharpening: Use a file or bench grinder to sharpen the cutting edge at the original angle. Remove equal metal from both ends.
  3. Balancing: Use a blade balancer or a nail through the center hole. Blade should sit level. File heavier end until balanced.
  4. Installation: Reinstall with blade wings pointing toward deck. Torque bolt to manufacturer's specification.

CAUTION! Wear heavy gloves when handling blade. An unbalanced blade causes excessive vibration and can damage the mower.

Storage

Proper storage at season's end prevents problems.

  1. Fuel: Option A: Run engine until it stops to empty carburetor. Option B: Add fuel stabilizer to tank, run engine for 5 minutes to circulate.
  2. Clean: Thoroughly clean underside of deck, top of mower, and wheels.
  3. Battery (if electric start): Remove battery and store in a cool, dry place. Charge periodically.
  4. Location: Store in a clean, dry place, protected from the elements. Cover with a breathable fabric.

WARNING! Do not store mower with fuel in tank indoors or in an enclosed area unless fuel has been completely drained.
